I would go further.

Flying should be much more expensive. I also like to be able to have coffee relatively cheaply anywhere in the world. However, it’s not what you want.

Leasing should become much more expensive, whether it is with an ICE or an EV, it does not matter. Cars use a lot of space and resources per person transported. Especially when you go to how many of the trips are just to transport one person. There are many people who have a larger car because that is useful if they have to do x once. Then they do x 3 times while owning that car.

Make public transport much cheaper, it now costs 362 euros per month (link) to buy off your train costs. However, that is only nice if you have to go somewhere with a train station. If you have to go somewhere by bus, you still have to pay full for it.

That 362 is payable if you are the only one who regularly travels by train. If you are a couple and want to go somewhere, the car is almost always cheaper. Especially if you pay for individual routes. But for 724 euros per month you can drive quite far even with the current petrol prices.

I would say 250 euros for the complete public transport per month is a good price. That includes local public transport. Make it possible for employers to benefit from such a subscription instead of a kilometer allowance. Then many people will take public transport because you get it “for free” from your boss. This subscription also includes a hefty discount on train journeys throughout Europe. Then the European rail network must be the same everywhere. What it is not now, the overhead wires have different voltages, the tracks are not the same width and so on. Then it is cheaper to keep trains running, people don’t have to change trains as often. If that all goes more smoothly, it is also more fun, you have a nice view, you can take it easier and you have leg room. Your holiday can then start where it should start your journey. Not your final destination.

I myself would say stimulate as much as possible to work locally, go by bicycle. If not take public transport, which I prefer to see in the form of Tram/Trolleybus or train. Although that is difficult between villages. An EV bus will not work quickly because you have to charge all the time, plus a bus line does not change so often that it is not possible to lay overhead wires.

I also think it’s a shame where I live now that I can’t store a cargo bike. Then I could do everything by bike or public transport. Now I sometimes borrow a car for large errands or the hardware store. Which almost everything could be done with a cargo bike.

Plastic in itself is not a problem. It’s the way we use plastic. If you have a product made of plastic that you use for 30 years, nothing to worry about. Then the impact is minimal. The same with plastic bags, if they are a bit busier, you can reuse them for much longer. Although I do 99% of my shopping with my backpack. Sometimes it doesn’t fit and you have to have an extra bag and you just forgot it. But those plastic bags from the supermarkets go into my bin about 3/4 of the time because they start to tear.

But sometimes I feel like a hypocrite, would like to live as I preach but unfortunately it is sometimes not possible. Which I find very annoying. Every time I catch myself doing something I really don’t want to do, I also get angry and sad at myself.

Another thing that is often discussed in climate is going vegan. I’m not in favor of that. If you are going to oblige people (directly or indirectly) to live vegan(s), you will get a lot of stiff reactions, especially now with the whole farmer problem. I am in favor of eating less meat but better quality. So that you don’t take anything away, but you can ensure that people deal with it more consciously and enjoy it.
