Unity says it will ‘probably’ have to fire staff after commotion – Gaming – News

Game engine maker Unity says in a letter to shareholders that layoffs are likely due to an adjusted strategy. The company made a loss of more than $125 million in the third quarter of 2023, which is half as much as in Q3 of 2022.

In the letter writes Unity about its engine: “We are currently evaluating the best cost structure that matches our portfolio. This quarter we plan to start implementing this plan. This will likely require canceling certain products, reducing our workforce and our office size needs to decrease.”

The restructuring is the result of the recent fuss about it new prize system for the company’s game engine of the same name. According to developers, the Runtime Fee pricing model is contrary to the first communicated terms of use. In response to this change was promised in the then CEO left.

Unity is likely introducing the new prize system due to the results so far. The company has never made a profit from sales of its engine, despite the software’s wide use. The company achieved sales of more than $544 million in the past quarter, an increase of more than 68 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Despite this, the company made a loss of $125 million. A year ago the loss was $250 million. Also looking at the entire year so far, the company’s significant losses are steadily decreasing. Until September 2023, the company made a loss of more than $572 million, while in the same period in 2022 the loss was more than $631 million. The new price system only came into effect after this period.
