The smallest and largest creatures make up most of Earth’s biomass, surprising study finds

Scientists have spent 5 years classifying the scale, mass and inhabitants of all dwelling organisms, and on the finish they made a shocking discovery — that the tiniest and largest dwelling entities on Earth dominate by sheer mass.

To sort out this gargantuan process, the staff, led by biologists from Rutgers College in New Jersey, and the College of British Columbia, divided life into 36 classes throughout terrestrial, marine and subterranean environments. Inside every group, they recognized the most important, smallest and most typical physique measurement. Then, combining that data with pre-existing knowledge on every group’s biomass, they estimated how a lot of the Earth’s biomass every class comprised.
