Sector asks cabinet to invest flight tax in sustainable aviation

The sector is asking for €400 million of the expected proceeds of €600 million to be reinvested in the development of cleaner kerosene and a fund for local residents, from which sound insulation can be paid. In addition, the money could be used to make taxiing at Schiphol more sustainable.

Marnix Fruitema, chairman of aviation umbrella organization Barin, says that there is little confidence in the fact that the government will reinvest the money from the flight tax back into the sector. “Normally, those proceeds go straight into the treasury and we see little of it in return. It has now been clearly established in the coalition agreement that part of those proceeds would go to making aviation more sustainable, and we would like to remind this government of that. said Fruitema.

By reinvesting, a signal is given that the cabinet is behind aviation. “That has been lacking so far,” continues the Barin chairman.

If the cabinet refuses, the proposal will be tabled again in September when the sector enters into discussions with the minister. “Then this will also be discussed in addition to the proposed reduction of Schiphol. But I don’t know why they would refuse, because it would be a great investment in the future,” concludes Fruitema.
