Sales of tablets and Chromebooks continue to decline

In 2023, there was less demand for tablets and Chromebooks. A recovery appears to be in the works for tablets, but not for Chromebooks.

2023 is a tough year for mobile device vendors and manufacturers. Whether it concerns smartphones, tablets or even laptops: last year there was less demand for new devices. This is also evident from the figures IDCwhere they see a decline of 14.2% percent for tablet sales.

Tablets

This brings the total number of tablets sold in Q3 2023 to 33.2 million units. Although fewer devices were still sold than a year ago, there appears to be an overall upward trend. In Q3 2023, 18% more devices were sold than in the previous quarter.

The king of the Tablets is still Apple. Despite the fact that in 2023 not a single new iPad was announced, 12.5 million iPads were sold. This gives the American company 37.5% of the tablet market. Samsung comes in as the second largest: the Korean brand sold around 6 million tablets in Q3 2023, giving it 18% of the market.

It is mainly the big brands that see their sales fall: Samsung by 17% compared to last year and Amazon even by almost half. Lenovo and Huawei seem to be less affected by declining tablet sales, while a lot of smaller brands seem to be doing better than last year.

Chromebooks

For Chromebooks, the situation doesn’t look very good. Every brand that makes Chromebooks is selling fewer than last year. Only 3.5 million ChromeOS laptops were sold in the third quarter of 2023, the IDC calculated. Acer, which is currently the leader when it comes to Chromebooks, sold a million devices last quarter. This means the company has more than a quarter of the market.

Moreover, Acer is not much affected by declining sales. With 6.3% fewer devices, the damage remains relatively limited. Things are different for HP and Dell, which fell by 16% and 28% respectively. Both sell approximately 700,000 devices – good for 19% of the entire Chromebook market.

Recovery for Chromebooks will mainly have to come from education, where the devices are popular because of the low entry cost. Google also launched a new series of Chromebook Plus devices more powerful devices with AI capabilities. Whether this will cause the figures to recover somewhat in and towards 2024 remains to be seen.
