Rush for passports: travelers must act quickly to avoid extra costs

The spike is the result of regulations that were changed ten years ago. Until 2014, passports and ID cards were valid for five years, but the validity period was changed to ten years. This means that this year many people will need a new ID at the same time.

The Ministry of the Interior previously warned of a spike in passport applications this year. “Check in time when your passport expires and how long it should be valid in the country of destination. This way you can contact your municipality in time for a new ID, but plan this well in advance,” says Frank Oostdam, director of the ANVR. .

Travelers who are in danger of receiving their new passport too late can submit an urgent application, but this costs an extra 57 euros in almost all municipalities. The total amount for a new passport can then exceed 140 euros.
