Nintendo Switch sales falter due to chip shortages

Nintendo Switch 2021

Nintendo’s sales of consoles and games have fallen sharply in the past quarter, according to the latest earnings meeting.

Where the Nintendo Switch is exceptional did well during the corona pandemic, that trend now seems to be reversing. Some 3.43 million units of the console were sold during the quarter, which is significantly lower than the 4.45 million units for the same period last year. The company makes this known in its quarterly figures. This contributed to the fact that the planned profits are also lower than expected.

According to the company, the Switch would do less well due to persistent shortages of parts, including chips. The Nintendo Switch OLED would sell well and with 1.52 million units make up a large part of the total number of consoles sold.

In addition to the disappointing console sales, the games also did not have the best period. Where 45.29 million units were sold last year, it was now only 41.41 million. The amount of first-party games from Nintendo itself was on the rise. They had the second best quarter ever. The peak of sales of Animal Crossing from 2021 is in first place. The company has some major releases coming in the coming period, including Mario Strikers: Battle League and Splatoon 3. Nintendo therefore hopes that these will pull back up in the coming quarter.

Yes or no Pro version

An additional reason for the decline in Nintendo console sales may also be the lack of a Nintendo Switch Pro. The Nintendo Switch has been around for a while since 2017, so it has been on the counter for several years now. We’ve been hearing on time for several years now and there have been rumors of the arrival of a Nintendo Switch Pro version that would be able to run heavier games at higher resolutions. The manufacturer keeps denying that they are working on a successor. If it depends on the fans, then the upgraded version is better sooner rather than later.
