How to hide sensitive photos in the Google Photos app

Hide Google Photos tip

Recently, Google Photos introduced a locked folder to keep sensitive photos and videos safe. How can you use it? We explain it to you.

Google Photos is simply being used as a gallery on more and more Android phones. This allows all your photos to be found in it; perhaps also photos that cannot tolerate daylight well. Fortunately, photos and videos can be hidden (easily). The Photos app for Android recently has a got a secure safe to store photos and videos. Once they are in the safe, you can no longer access them from your regular gallery app.

Google secures the vault with your lock screen password (or your biometric login, in the form of a fingerprint or face scan). As a result, the chance that you will forget the password for the safe is relatively small. At the same time, the safe can be opened by anyone who knows your screen lock. So if you want to hide photos from your girlfriend or best friends, this is probably not the best solution. At the same time – if you want to hide photos or videos from your girlfriend, it might be time for a hearty conversation.

This is how you hide (sensitive) photos and videos

Before you start setting up the vault, remember that the locked files are not included in the Google Photos backup. In addition, the safe is connected to the app – and therefore the device. If you remove the app from your smartphone, you also delete all photos and videos that were in the safe in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, setting up the safe is not without risks, but fortunately your sensitive files are safely stored away.

Google photos locked folder
  1. Open the Google Photos app on Android
  2. Long press a photo on the home screen
  3. Swipe right in the bottom bar until you see Move to locked folder
  4. Click on that and then choose the option Set up at the bottom right
  5. Select Continue and then Move to finally set up the vault

Do you want to see the files in the safe again? It takes a while to find at first sight. The option for this can be found under the Library tab, at the Tools and then Locked folder. To open the folder you need your biometric login or password (pin or pattern). You can remove photos and videos from the folder by long-pressing them in the locked folder and clicking Move.
