Those who had hoped for a launch of Android 13 in August will have to be patient for a while. The new Android version will appear in September at the earliest.

Google introduced the first Developer Preview of Android 13 in February. Developers for the Android platform can already get acquainted with the new platform. Android fans can also indulge themselves and enjoy the latest Android functionalities. After Google released four unstable beta versions, it came up with the first stable Android 13 beta. When the stable update would appear, remained unknown. On a Google’s update page Security Bulletin more information has been released this time.

Reveal only in September?

It was expected that after the early unveiling of the Developer Previews, Google would also speed up the update to Android 13. That doesn’t seem to be the case now. Google writes in the Security Bulletin of August for the Android 13 beta that the operating system “by default receives the security level” from 01-09-2022. An official unveiling of Android 13 updates in August seems to be off the cards. It is curious that Google puts this comment on the bulletin written for the month of August.

However, a disclosure in August does not have to be fully written off. With the unveiling of Android 12, Google published the AOSP code two weeks before the updates started rolling out to Pixel devices. Such AOSP code, the basis of Android, is used by manufacturers to develop their own updates. Larger manufacturers such as Samsung do receive early access – usually a few months in advance – to the AOSP code. This allows devices to be updated faster and faster after Android releases.

New features in Android 13

Users who are used to the design of Android 12 will not have much trouble getting used to the design of the latest release. However, Google did put some work into Material You, so that we now have dynamic app icons. In Android 13 we also finally get the option to set a language per app, the privacy options have been expanded and we see further support for foldable phones and tablets. As soon as Google reveals Android 13, it will still take a while before you receive the update on your smartphone. Pixel phones excepted, each manufacturer still has to work to update your device. This often takes several months with high-end phones and can sometimes take up to a year for midrange or budget phones.
