The Conservative Case for Psychedelic Medicine

In June, I traveled to Denver with Zach Weismueller to cowl the Psychedelic Science 2023 convention, organized by the Multidisciplinary Affiliation for Psychedelic Research (MAPS), a bunch that has been working to achieve Meals and Drug Administration approval of MDMA-assisted remedy for PTSD because the late Eighties. We produced a 30-minute documentary about as we speak’s “psychedelic renaissance.”

Probably the most shocking speaker on the convention was Rick Perry, the previous Texas governor and Trump administration vitality secretary. What in tarnation was a conservative Republican doing on the stage, extolling the virtues of medicine lengthy related to hippies and Nineteen Sixties counterculture?

I sat down with Perry to study why he believes psychedelics ought to be authorized drugs for veterans and others affected by PTSD, the way to permit extra immigrants to return to America lawfully, and why if he have been ever to take a psychedelic drug it could be Ibogaine, a notoriously highly effective substance comprised of the bark of an African tree.
