Significant increase in air traffic to and from Dutch airports


In 2023, August was the busiest month with 48,100 flights, when 7.1 million passengers traveled to and from the Netherlands. Sunday, July 30 and Monday, August 7 were the busiest days of 2023, when 246,000 travelers passed through the terminals of the five major airports. The day with the fewest passengers was Tuesday, January 24, with 113,000 passengers.

Occupancy rate
The average occupancy rate also increased compared to 2022. In 2023, an average of 79 out of every 100 aircraft seats were occupied on passenger flights, compared to 76 a year earlier. In 2019 there were 81.

Despite the increase in passenger air transport, pre-corona levels have not yet been reached at all airports in the Netherlands. Schiphol handled almost 442,000 flights and 61.9 million passengers in 2023; that is 87 percent of all flights for all airline passengers to and from the Netherlands. There were almost 18 percent more passengers than in 2022, but almost 14 percent fewer compared to 2019.

Growth Eindhoven and Rotterdam
Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Eindhoven Airport are the only two airports in the Netherlands where more passengers passed through the terminals in 2023 than in 2022 and in 2019. With almost 6.9 million passengers in 2023, Eindhoven remains the Netherlands’ second airport for passenger transport. 2.2 million passengers flew to and from Rotterdam in 2023.

The most popular connection to and from a Dutch airport in 2023 was between the Netherlands and Barcelona, ​​El Prat: 1.8 million travelers. In 2022, this Spanish airport was also the most popular with 1.5 million travelers. In both 2022 and 2023, London Heathrow came in second place with 1.1 million and 1.4 million travelers respectively.
