Huawei will reportedly start building its first factory in Europe next year. This was reported by an anonymous source to the Reuters news agency. That factory will produce equipment for mobile networks. It is not known when the factory should be completed.
Huawei already shared plans for a European factory in 2020, Reuters wrote at the time. Construction was supposed to start earlier, but was delayed due to the corona pandemic. The company now plans to start construction next year, according to a source familiar with the plans to the news agency. The factory will be located in Brumath, near Strasbourg. It is not known when production will start. The Chinese manufacturer previously said that it will initially invest 200 million euros in the factory.
Construction of the factory will begin while a number of European governments have banned the use of Huawei 5G equipment. For example, the company does not supply ‘core technology’ for 5G networks in the Netherlands and Belgium. Several countries do this because of ‘security concerns’. Equipment from the Chinese ZTE is banned by some countries for the same reason. The US has sales of new telecom equipment from Huawei and ZTE, for example, are also banned.
In 2020, France also reportedly informed telecom providers that they could not renew their licenses to purchase Huawei 5G equipment. After talks with China in July, the country is said to have reversed that effective ban in a number of cities, Reuters writes.
