Public Prosecution Service demands up to two years in prison and a 10,000 euro fine against Tikkie fraud suspects – IT Pro – News

The Public Prosecution Service is demanding ‘up to 24 months’ in prison and a fine of 10,000 euros against two suspects of Tikkie fraud. The two Dutch men are said to have stolen thousands of euros from dozens of victims.

On Tuesday, the two suspects, a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, stood trial for ‘large-scale online fraud’. writes the Public Prosecution Service. The case started after several victims reported ‘Tikke fraud’, in which they were defrauded of ‘thousands’ of euros. The Public Prosecution Service is therefore demanding a fine of 10,000 euros. A prison sentence of 24 months is being demanded against the 27-year-old man. The Public Prosecution Service is asking for a prison sentence of 20 months against the 25-year-old suspect.

The victims were approached because they had a Marktplaats advertisement online. They were ‘tricked’ into clicking on a 1 cent Tikkie payment request for verification, which redirected the victims to a phishing website. The victims entered their login details there, after which the suspects allegedly used them to gain access to their bank accounts. Money was then transferred to the suspects’ accounts or items were purchased with the victims’ bank account. The police tracked down the suspects via telephone numbers and the IP addresses with which they logged into the victims’ bank accounts, the Public Prosecution Service reports.

According to the public prosecutor, the two have ‘demonstrably caused many victims’. One perpetrator did this over a period of three months, the other during six months. The two suspects may or may not have acted jointly. Individually, the two suspects are said to have caused comparable financial damage, the Public Prosecution Service says. The two suspects have previously been convicted for a similar offense.
