Douglass had the audacity to imagine that America’s story was not completed till the nation saved all her guarantees. There’s a hidden affection within the stinging phrases of rebuke.
Over 100 years later, in his “I Have a Dream” speech, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., would echo Douglass: “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent phrases of the Structure and the Declaration of Independence, they have been signing a promissory notice to which each American was to fall inheritor. This notice was a promise that every one males — sure, Black males in addition to white males — can be assured the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
