OneDrive in Teams gets a much-needed upgrade

Microsoft Teams says goodbye to the outdated Files app and exchanges it for OneDrive for Teams. The change is immediately available in the updated Teams app.

OneDrive for Teams streamlines according to Microsoft’s file storage and management policies. “The new OneDrive app takes advantage of all the recent updates to the OneDrive and SharePoint library experiences and gives you the benefits of performance improvements, new views, and feature enhancements in OneDrive,” it said.

Above all, it should be a lot easier to find files. According to Microsoft, after the update, users no longer have to search for the right file in individual conversations, but can simply find it in OneDrive for Teams. With filters for file types, names and people it would be much easier to find the file you want. It is also possible to sort files by specific senders (persons) and meetings.

OneDrive for Teams comes with the following tabs:

  • OneDrive Home: the overview of all files on OneDrive, including “For you” section;
  • Shared: all files ever shared with you, whether in conversations, meetings, emails, or from other Microsoft 365 apps;
  • Persons: shows an overview of the people you work with and all the files you have shared with them or received from them;
  • Meetings: provides a list of all meetings and the files shared therein, for each meeting you can also see who participated and when the meeting took place;
  • Waste paper basket: From now on, you can restore (accidentally) deleted files from Teams via the Trash tab.

Integration of cloud services

With the update, Microsoft Teams also immediately bans the old integrations of cloud services. It remains possible to integrate services such as Dropbox, but for this the service must develop a Teams app. Microsoft claims to be working with the relevant parties on such apps.

Rollout of OneDrive for Teams

The rollout of OneDrive for Teams has now started. Users can activate the new Teams app via the switch at the top left of the screen. The classic Teams app is expected to receive the update in the spring of 2024. Microsoft does not yet want to give an exact date. The classic version will retain the Files name, despite the switch to OneDrive integration.
