Microsoft Outlook Lite official: lighter inbox on your smartphone

Outlook app op Android

Microsoft has officially announced Outlook Lite. The app offers you the full Outlook experience in a more efficient package.

Smartphones in higher price ranges, say from 150 to 200 euros, are often smooth enough to run the regular apps from the Google Play Store. For Android devices around 100 euros, that sometimes starts to become a lot more difficult. On the one hand, this is due to the limited storage capacity, and on the other hand, you often get relatively little working memory on such models. Developers like Meta and Google, albeit to a limited extent, offer so-called Lite apps to tackle this. Microsoft closes get on with it now with its own Outlook Lite app for Android smartphones.

Microsoft Outlook Lite

Outlook Lite should therefore work more smoothly on Android smartphones that are less heavily equipped. At the same time, the app offers the main functions of its big brother. In the app you will find your e-mails, agenda and (Microsoft) contacts. Of course you can also send e-mails and schedule appointments. You can use the Outlook Live app for Outlook, Hotmail, Live, MSN, Microsoft 365, and Exchange Online accounts.

Functionally, the application is therefore as good as the original Outlook app. Yet you save a lot on working and storage memory. According to Microsoft, the app only takes up 5 MB of storage, it can use RAM more efficiently (works on phones with less than 1 GB of RAM) and will save you battery consumption through the operation of the app. Finally, if you ever end up in regions with poor (mobile) connections, Outlook Lite is also a must. It also works smoothly on 2G and 3G.

Focus on emerging markets

Are you eager to download the app on your Android smartphone? Then unfortunately we have to disappoint you. Microsoft writes in the announcement that the app will be “available first” in countries such as Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa. With this, Microsoft is following a similar tactic to Meta and Google. With the Lite apps, those developers are also targeting markets that are growing the fastest, and where more expensive phones are even more rare.

We will probably not encounter the Outlook Lite app in the Play Store in Belgium in the short term. Fortunately, there is one detour. on APKMirror installation files for the Lite app are available. Please note that you have to update the app manually every time.
