Letters to the Editor — July 30, 2023

Eliminate sheds
I applaud Mayor Adams and New York Metropolis Division of Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo on their instrumental plan to take away ugly sheds and scaffolding from metropolis sidewalks (“Adams presses metropolis to ‘shed’ scaffolds,” July 25).
The mayor’s plan will open sidewalks to create a extra strollin a position metropolis and extra vibrant neighborhoods. Rising pedestrian entry will even result in extra foot visitors for native companies and act as a criminal offense deterrent.
I’m happy that this public house and security concern is now getting the eye it deserves from the mayor.
Betsy Gotbaum, Government Director, Residents Union, Manhattan

Shoplifting disaster
My coronary heart goes out to Donna Hansbrough, the Georgia Lowe’s employee who was fired by her firm after she stood as much as shoplifters (“Employee fights theft, will get ax,” July 23).
Mrs. Hansbrough was injured combating off criminals — pitiless brutes who shamefully punched an aged girl — however her cowardly and gutless bosses punished her as a substitute. It’s a horrible injustice to her.
It’s clear that this example of whole impunity for shoplifting can not proceed. It makes a mockery of the rule of legislation, it threatens hurt to atypical residents, and it may collapse the retail economic system altogether as soon as shops begin closing down after their stock is looted. One thing’s obtained to provide. It’s an issue on either side of the Atlantic.
I pray Hansbrough bounces again from this incident, and I hope it prompts corporations to suppose severely about the best way to do higher.

Dairy cruelties
Thanks for “Researchers have a cow over plant milks” (July 26).
The article states that folks keep away from cow’s milk for well being, ecological sustainability and “different causes.”
Would these different causes embody intensive confinement of animals, mutilation with out anesthetic, involuntary impregnations, infants being separated from their moms, male infants being pressured to endure so their flesh could be a “delicacy” and so forth? These are customary procedures for almost all of the meat and dairy trade.

Keep in mind Until
Depart it to a person of compassion, empathy, tolerance and decency like President Biden to spearhead the institution of memorial statues to commemorate the savage homicide of Emmett Until, a 14-year-old boy whose “capital crime” was to have allegedly whistled at a white girl (“Biden honors ’55 slay vic Emmett Until,” July 26).
Calling to thoughts Emmett Until won’t be standard in some components of the nation through which America’s racist underpinnings are deemed too uncomfortable to acknowledge.
The president’s actions carry consolation to surviving members of Emmett’s household and to all whose lives have been impacted by racial animus.
Oren Spiegler, Peters Township, Pa.

RIP, Tony Bennett
It was unhappy to listen to the passing of Tony Bennett (“Lifetime of iconic crooner,” July 22).
Nobody may sing like Bennett. His voice was distinctive. He by no means misplaced that easy voice.
I can bear in mind once I was only a child, my sister got here house from the report retailer with a forty five report she bought. It was a tune by Bennett known as “Rags to Riches.” I will need to have listened to that tune hundreds of instances.
Relaxation in peace, Tony. You may be missed, however your music will go on eternally.
Robert Johann, Queens
