Nation’s smoky skies
ought to spur motion

Re: “Bay Space feels East Coast ache” (Web page A1, June 8).

I wonder if the smoke from the Canadian wildfires now polluting the air in lots of Midwestern states will persuade Republican voters there to lastly demand motion to battle local weather change from their members of Congress.

If it does, and Republicans now not set roadblocks to efficient environmental motion, that will be a silver lining to the clouds of smoke now blanketing the area.

It’s time for San Jose
to strive one thing new

The homeless disaster in San Jose is getting worse. What we’re doing isn’t working. We have to get inventive and switch to revolutionary options we haven’t thought of prior to now.

The very fact is reallocating a portion of the Measure E funds — $38 million — to homeless companies isn’t going to have a serious impression on the estimated $5.7 billion {dollars} per 12 months that an evaluation by CalMatters says California must spend on reasonably priced housing. However it could make a distinction to the greater than 6,000 homeless in our metropolis.

Important companies profit everybody in our neighborhood by addressing the foundation causes of homelessness, providing sources, and typically stopping homelessness within the first place. Which is why we strongly encourage the San Jose Metropolis Council  to assist the mayor’s funds message as proposed. It’s time we mitigate this disaster and assist our most weak.

S.J. plan consigns
folks to RV life

Re: “Parking website for RVs will get approval” (Web page A1, June 8).

San Jose has accepted $18.9 million to lease a Berryessa website for as much as 85 RVs presently occupied by homeless folks. Furthermore, San Jose officers estimate a price of $24 million for the venture over a five-year interval (over $282,000/area).

The query is, why would San Jose not spend this cash to assist these folks relocate to states the place the roles/housing combine would enable them to dwell in an honest dwelling? The one believable reply is that these folks do the difficult-to-fill jobs within the low-wage service industries which cater to the high-tech financial system of Silicon Valley. If these folks transfer, our house-of-cards financial system may properly crumble as our lifestyle spirals downward.

If carried out, this venture will create an underclass of individuals completely reliant on the general public dole, confined to an RV in perpetuity. In what world is that this good public coverage?

Like recovering pope,
Biden is just not too outdated

Re: “Pope Francis has profitable surgical procedure” (Web page A4, June 8).

I used to be heartened to learn that Pope Francis is recovering from his newest operation and can be “effective.”

He has been a “breath of contemporary air” in his management over a worldwide, complicated, various establishment with generational issues. The article talked about that he’s 86 years outdated. That’s the identical age that Joe Biden could be on the finish of his second time period if re-elected.

The thought occurred to me that a few of the criticism of Biden operating for a second time period is simply plain ageism in an period of polarized political rhetoric and social media.

Choking air strikes
volunteers to motion

Sunday’s political cartoon speaks volumes (Web page A12). Surrounded by wildfire smoke, Smokey the Bear is holding a “Local weather Change Inaction” poster whereas pointing ahead and exclaiming, “Morons!” Smokey demonstrates a stark reminder that extra motion have to be taken in opposition to local weather change if we’re to take care of a livable world.

Smoke-filled skies and harmful air air pollution from Canada’s worst wildfire season ever unfold throughout the East Coast not too long ago, paying homage to what the Bay Space skilled throughout the devastating California wildfires of 2018 and 2020. The AQI in Queens, N.Y., reached a stunning 407, categorized as “hazardous.” Washington, D.C., and Baltimore skilled the worst air high quality ranges recorded in these cities in recent times.

One thousand Residents’ Local weather Foyer volunteers are in D.C. this week assembly with members of Congress concerning the want for extra laws on local weather. My hope is that the latest smoke-filled skies will spur Congress to heed their recommendation.

We’ve set a low bar
for saving democracy

Re: “Pence saved our democracy and he’d be a terrific president” (Web page A13, June 11).

Mike Pence saved democracy? What a low bar we’ve set.

Washington Submit columnist Marc Thiessen gushes over a politician doing the best factor they will do of their job — adhere to the Structure. The vp did one factor he was presupposed to do on the finish of his time period and now calls it a triumph for freedom. He can’t disguise the four-year coat-tail journey that led to his and his boss’s defeat. It’s slightly late to begin choosing on Donald Trump, proper or not.

As an Impartial and now a member of AARP, I’ll hold voting as a result of I like the chance. However I perceive the futility in youthful voices concerning the selections given.

I don’t have a solution for the political machine, however I don’t need to chuckle about it anymore. I simply want the bar wasn’t set so low in holding “leaders” accountable for what they are saying and do (or don’t do).

Donald Trump might
but face justice

The Republicans are right. Donald J. Trump has been held to a distinct normal than different folks. The DOJ has been terribly deferential and cautious when coping with Trump.
