Sacred land is
no place for mine

Re. “Combined conclusions on mine proposal,” Web page A1, July 30:

Juristac is the center of the Amah Mutsun conventional panorama, and a mine would destroy that coronary heart. As an individual of religion, I really feel it’s essential that our county acknowledges the non secular human rights of the tribe and turns down this allow.

For the First Folks inhabiting this space for 1000’s of years, it’s crucial that the integrity of Juristac be maintained. With a unanimous vote, the county Human Rights Fee really useful that this allow be denied, recognizing {that a} mine would destroy probably the most sacred ceremonial websites of Juristac, and add immeasurably to the historic trauma the Amah Mutsun have suffered via fixed disenfranchisement and destruction of their tradition.

Juristac shouldn’t be the place for a gravel mine. I want to see a extra complete article in The Mercury Information in regards to the impacts of the mission on the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band.

Relocating otters would
profit different species

“May sea otters relocate to S.F. Bay?” (Web page A1, July 28) made no point out of how the lack of the ocean otter to this area has contributed to the devastating lack of large kelp forests on the West Coast.

Certainly, The Mercury Information article “Swarms of purple urchins are overwhelming the West Coast” (Oct. 24, 2019 ), reported that “90% of the large bull kelp forests have been devoured by purple urchins, inflicting different vital species, together with abalone and pink urchins, to starve to dying.”

Otter relocation was pitted towards “delicate financial points with industrial crab fisherman” who worry the otter shall be a competitor. However the northern sea otter eats urchins, snails, clams, abalone, mussels, crabs and different invertebrates. In addition they eat fish.

All carnivores, crabs included, in the end rely on herbivores. As a substitute of viewing the ocean otter as a competitor, it needs to be welcomed as an ally in sustaining a wholesome ecosystem the place crabs, too, will thrive.

journalist and buddy

I received to know Jerry Ceppos nicely whereas he was at Knight Ridder and I used to be Director of the Journalism College at San Jose State College. I invited him to my graduate seminar. With Jerry within the room, college students watched TV in awe as he was interviewed on “Nightline.”

I employed him to show a category and that one class launched his second profession in academe. He was shortly tabbed for the deanship at Nevada-Reno. After I went to CSU Fullerton as Dean and he moved to LSU, we labored collectively nationally on committees, having fun with dinners, wine and deep conversations. He was a powerful host in New Orleans and at LSU soccer video games. We messaged virtually weekly, usually dissecting the most recent college scandal someplace.

He beloved his career, his college students, his household. He was an ideal advocate for journalism training and an excellent higher buddy. I’ll miss his byline in my inbox.

Don’t infringe on
Second Modification

As a Black and Brown member of the neighborhood. I extremely urge you to cease infringing on our Second Modification rights as all this does is make it more durable for my law-abiding Black and Brown neighborhood members to safe their households. If we will’t belief the police, then who is meant to actually shield our family members in an emergency, heat-of-the-moment scenario?

Taxing gun homeowners is discrimination, and illegally infringing on our Second Modification solely makes it so criminals and the wealthy can have entry to a firearm. We have now too many unfair guidelines right here as it’s. Go away us alone – much less authorities and extra freedom.
