Berkeley measure
didn’t idiot voters

Re. “Voters OK many reasonably priced housing measures,” Web page A1, Nov. 12:

Why did Berkeley reject a housing bond measure? As a result of it wasn’t a housing bond.

Our Metropolis Council ignored public polling and burdened an in any other case widespread housing measure with spending authority for imprecise “infrastructure” and “visitors security” objectives – an officers’ want checklist that lacked public assist.

Then they sunk it, by stipulating that the Metropolis Council may spend the brand new taxes on completely something they needed.

Berkeley voters have very generously funded previous infrastructure bonds. Every time, we’ve ended up with costly, wasteful and berserk status initiatives; much less infrastructure; and notably much less visitors security.

Metropolis officers have relied on these bonds to let pavement crumble, as a substitute of prudently allocating restricted Basic Fund income to handle actual, primary upkeep wants.

This time, a decisive plurality of voters adopted The Who’s electoral recommendation: “We received’t get fooled once more.” Subsequent time, if the Metropolis Council ignores the general public once more, no voters could be the bulk.

Cease assuming strikers
are all the time proper

Re. “48,000 UC tutorial employees go on strike,” Web page A1, Nov. 15:

There appears a presumption, each within the paper and amongst Bay Space individuals usually, that anybody placing – like varied different classes of individuals – is inherently proper.

In protecting this strike, pay ranges have typically been cited with out noting these jobs are largely half-time.

The union has cited a $24-$30K vary, although UC claims to pay some employees extra.

If we double this (for full-time equivalency), that is roughly common earnings for U.S. full-time employees (although a bit low for Bay Space).

There are various assistant professors, relying on the college and division, who don’t make vastly greater than this, together with many newspaper reporters.

A geographic cost-of-living adjustment would appear acceptable.

As famous in the identical paper’s Native part, 1,700 California ex-public-employees in the meantime draw pensions exceeding $245,000 yearly.

Don’t overlook the prices of public workers all the time robotically being proper.

Her response was to tweet, “Arizonans know BS after they see it,” and I assumed to myself, “What an ideal epitaph for the election denier motion.”
