Kamala Harris for attorney general? Biden’s VP options

To the editor: Columnist George Skelton’s “answer” — have President Biden persuade Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to resign so Gov. Gavin Newsom can appoint Vice President Kamala Harris to fill Feinstein’s seat — is fascinating, however I’ve a greater thought.

Merrick Garland, weary of politics and relentless assaults from the proper, agrees to step down as lawyer basic, and Biden picks Harris, a former California lawyer basic, to exchange him. Then Biden asks Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to be his vp.

Harris is a superb reader of tea leaves. She will see forward to 2028, and he or she wants extra time to enhance her odds of being elected to the White Home.

One other advantage of this: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, now a resident of Michigan, might run for governor of that state, thus constructing his resume as a possible presidential contender sooner or later.

To the editor: Feinstein retiring early to get replaced by Harris can be a catastrophe for Democrats.

Beneath the twenty fifth Modification, Harris’ alternative for vp would should be confirmed by a majority vote of Congress, together with the GOP-controlled Home. The Republicans would by no means verify a politically well-liked alternative.

Worse, they may choose to not verify anybody, leaving Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) first in line for the presidency (behind the octogenarian president) till the subsequent administration is inaugurated in 2025.

To the editor: Skelton says that each Biden and California have issues as if it’s a truth. Proper-wing Republicans prefer to painting Harris as a burden to the president and Feinstein as an issue for California.

This isn’t the case. Feinstein is just not operating for reelection after greater than 30 years of excellent service.

Additionally, not each Democrat sees Harris as a burden, and having a girl of coloration on the poll attracts voters from all events. This was the case in 2020, and nothing suggests the outcome will probably be totally different in 2024.

Skelton is totally off base in his assertions.
