Humans were in South America at least 25,000 years ago, giant sloth bone pendants reveal

The date that people arrived in South America has been pushed again to at the least 25,000 years in the past, based mostly on an unlikely supply: bones from an extinct large floor sloth that had been crafted into pendants by historical individuals.

Found within the Santa Elina rock shelter in central Brazil, three sloth osteoderms — bony deposits that kind a sort of protecting armor over the pores and skin of animals akin to armadillos — discovered close to stone instruments sported tiny holes that solely people may have made.

The discovering is among the many earliest proof for people within the Americas, in keeping with a paper printed Wednesday (July 12) within the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B
