Google Photos has been popular for ages. Where many Android manufacturers previously stubbornly stuck to their own photo app, we increasingly find Google Photos as the standard photo application. Google Photos is also quite popular on iOS and desktop. The archive function is one of the many useful features of Google Photos. Archiving hides your photos without deleting them. So they are still in the cloud. Handy if, for example, you don’t want to see embarrassing photos every time in your photo app. We tell you how it works.

“Archiving hides your photos without deleting them.”

1. Archive photos on PC

For anyone using Google Photos on their PC, go to photos.google.com. Here you will find your photo collection. Find the photo you want to archive and click on this image. At the top right you see the option to click on three vertical dots. Expand this menu and at the bottom you will find the option to archive. It is also possible to use Shift + A to accomplish the same action. You can find the archive folder by clicking ‘Archive’ in the main menu on the left.

2. Archive photos on smartphone

Whether you use an Android device, iPhone or iPad; the use of Google Photos is similar in this respect. Select a photo that you want to archive, and then press the three vertical dots. Then tap on ‘Move to archive’ and it’s done. Do you want to retrieve photos from the archive? Then open the Photos app and tap ‘Library’ at the bottom and then ‘Archive’. Then you see an overview with all archived images.

3. Unarchive photos

Over time, do you find yourself wanting to have (certain) archived photos back in your regular library? Which can! On your PC, go to the ‘Archive’ folder and select one or more photos by clicking on them, or using Shift + A. In the smartphone app, go to the archive folder and click on a photo to select it.

Press and hold a photo to select several. Then tap the three dots and the option ‘Restore from archive’. Good to know: archived photos still show up in searches. That way you can find them quite easily. Archived images also remain in photo albums.
