Charges on the East Bay’s largest water district have doubled over the previous 10 years — and vital will increase are more likely to proceed for the foreseeable future.

That’s pushed largely by the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s want to exchange its growing old water pipes and different infrastructure, a few of which date to the 19th century, the rising prices of capital undertaking building, and better costs for chemical compounds, power and labor.

The district can also be upgrading its wastewater therapy services and contemplating new water storage and provides because the state is locked in a drought and local weather change redefines California’s water future.

It’s a difficult time forward for the district, which serves 1.4 million folks in a lot of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and its management board, for which two seats are on the poll within the Nov. 8 election.

Our suggestions to voters: Marguerite Younger in Ward 3 — overlaying Orinda, Moraga, Piedmont, El Sobrante and components of Oakland, Pinole and Richmond — and Matt Turner in Ward 7 — together with Castro Valley, and components of San Leandro, Hayward and San Ramon.

Ward 3: Marguerite Younger

Whereas we have now had considerations about incumbent Younger’s shut ties to labor, she is well-informed on the challenges the district faces and is conscious of the environmental results of any determination the district makes to import water from new sources.

Challenger Mark Seedall is a planner on the neighboring Contra Costa Water District who says his background would make him the higher match for the District 3 seat. However, whereas he complains about East Bay MUD spending, he was unable to articulate particular initiatives of concern. Regardless of his skilled background, he apparently didn’t do a lot homework earlier than working.

Ward 7: Matt Turner

After 28 years on the board, Director Frank Mellon is retiring on the finish of the 12 months. Of the three candidates vying to exchange him, Turner stands out for his ardour about environmental points affecting the district and the necessity to guarantee residents can afford their water — and for his familiarity with particulars of the district’s insurance policies.

Turner, a former aide to Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, now has his personal advocacy consulting agency. He ran unsuccessfully towards Mellon in 2010 and has chaired the Alameda County Transportation Fee’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee since 2017.

The opposite two candidates are Corina Lopez, a software program advisor and San Leandro metropolis councilwoman who will probably be stepping down after eight years due to time period limits, and April Chan, who manages household properties and has been appointed by county supervisors to the Fairview Municipal Advisory Council and the county Fireplace Advisory Fee.
