Anatolian fault that gave rise to deadly Turkey and Syria quakes formed 5 million years ago



The East Anatolian fault, web site of a lethal February 2023 earthquake, shaped 5 million years in the past due to the squeeze of the Eurasian and Arabian plates, new analysis finds.

The creation of the fault cracked the crust from the North Anatolian fault to the Lifeless Sea fault, breaking the Anatolian plate free from the Eurasian plate — the start of a brand new tectonic plate.
