Samsung is acquiring British AI startup Oxford Semantic for an undisclosed amount. Oxford Semantic specializes in knowledge graphsa technology that can be used for more advanced AI applications.
Samsung and Oxford Semantic signed an agreement on Thursday, writes Samsung in a press releaseThe two have been working together on various projects since 2018, the tech giant says. The company wants to use this to better personalize AI applications on its phones, for example. According to the South Korean tech giant, Oxford Semantics’ techniques are also used more broadly, for example in its televisions and household appliances.
The two companies are not disclosing any financial details about the acquisition. Competition regulators will still have to approve the deal. The two companies are not saying when exactly they expect the acquisition to be completed.
Oxford Semantic was founded in 2017 by three professors from Oxford University. The company operates so-called knowledge graphs. This is a database technology that stores data as a kind of network of entities and relationships between those entities. In this way, the system tries to retrieve information and recommendations faster and to understand what someone means with a specific question.
