The United States government is reportedly preparing a complete sales ban on software from Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Lab. The ban would come into effect on September 29 and concerns the sale, updating and downloading of the software.

According to Reuters sources The cabinet led by President Joe Biden views Kaspersky’s software as a security risk. The ban of Kaspersky software will take effect after 100 days from the time of announcement, and companies and users will have time to find an alternative during that period. Products that integrate Kaspersky software, possibly under a different brand name, are also banned in the US, according to the sources. The plans have not yet been confirmed by the relevant government.

The US has been taking action against the use of software from the Russian company for some time. Since 2017 the Department of Homeland Security is already prohibited from using the software and since 2022 This is also the case for all companies that receive federal subsidies. There is also a partial ban on the use of Kaspersky products in the Netherlands, specifically within the national government.
