Microsoft Pusht Copilot even harder in Word: icon follows you everywhere

Microsoft is going to integrate Copilot even stronger in Word for the web. The ‘Draft with Copilot’ button will soon remain in the margin next to your cursor.

Where the icon previously only appeared with a new document or an empty rule, it will now remain visible, even in the middle of a paragraph. That reports HowToGeek. For those who do not use Copilot, it may feel like another Microsoft attempt to force the AI tool on you.

Intrusive with Copilot

That is how it feels, because the icon takes up unnecessary space and replaces a functionality that was also simply accessible via a right mouse click or the Alt + I shortcut. Moreover, it appears to be difficult to close the Copilot interface again: clicking or typing in the document does not help, only the ESC key (which does not work on all systems) or the cross in the corner of the window do the trick.

Everyone with a Copilot license receives this ‘upgrade’ automatically, including subscribers of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family (of which Copilot has been a part of since January 2025) for an additional cost of 3 dollars per month.

A switch -off option is missing for the time being. The only way to ban Copilot from your screen is down to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic. Although Microsoft warns that this is a temporary solution: the change will only be active with your next subscription extension. Do you really want to get rid of Copilot? Then the desktop version of Word remains the only ‘clean’ option for the time being.
