Here’s why Madhuri Dixit rejected Salman Khan’s Hum Saath-Saath Hain

Sooraj Barjatya’s beloved family drama, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, recently celebrated its 24th anniversary. This 1999 release achieved the status of the highest-grossing film of the year, boasting a star-studded ensemble that included Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Karisma Kapoor, Mohnish Bahl, Sonali Bendre, and Neelam Kothari, among others. Interestingly, Madhuri Dixit recently disclosed the reason she declined the role which was then offered to Tabu.

Hum saath saath hai

Madhuri revealed during an interview with a leading platform that Sooraj Barjatya, who held her in high regard during the late ’90s, expressed his desire to cast her in the film. However, the role selection was a bit uncertain, so Madhuri engaged in a conversation with him to determine the most suitable character for her.

She clarified that taking on the roles played by Karisma Kapoor and Sonali Bendre, particularly after their collaboration in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! would be challenging. Madhuri felt that portraying a “bhabhi-dewar” relationship with Salman Khan would be complicated, given their romantic roles in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!. As a result, she politely declined the role, which eventually went to Tabu.

Madhuri also highlighted a specific scene in the film that played a crucial role in her decision. In this scene, Salman Khan touches Tabu’s feet and embraces her, portraying a genuine “bhabhi-dewar” dynamic between them. However, Madhuri humorously pointed out that if she were in Tabu’s place, envisioning Salman touching her feet might have elicited a different reaction from the audience. This, she believes, was the right decision.
