1,100-year-old breastplate to ward off evil may contain the oldest Cyrillic writing ever found

A 1,100 year-old inscription discovered on a breastplate unearthed within the ruins of a Bulgarian fortress could also be one of many oldest Cyrillic texts ever discovered.

“The textual content was written on a lead plate worn on the chest to guard the wearer from hassle and evil,” mentioned Ivailo Kanev, an archaeologist with Bulgaria’s Nationwide Museum who leads the crew excavating the fortress, which is on the border between Greece and Bulgaria.
